TNION leaders representing 77,000 municipal busmen adopted a "wait and see" attitude over their claims for a 6.6 per cent wages increase when they met employers last week.
At a meeting of the Joint Industrial Council, the leaders were expected to reply to the employers' offer. However, they indicated that the figures given them at a previous meeting had not been fully investigated.
It was clear that they were unwilling to commit themselves before publication of the Prices and Incomes Board report on busmen's pay.
The main work accomplished at the meeting was the successful conclusion of a number of productivity schemes, including those at Stockport, Bury and South Shields.
The employers also took the chance of pointing out that 40 per cent of municipal bus undertakings were "in the red" and the others were not in a sound financial position.
Something in the region of 15s. 6d. is being claimed by the busmen. At the moment the basic pay is i12 is. 9d.
