Bearded shock-headed George Rotherham, a 40-year-old St Helens lorry driver, is as skilful on his feet as he is on his seat. As team coach of Pilkington Harriers he recently took a party of 40 to West Germany for a special invitation triangular athletics match in St Helens' twin town of Stuttgart. Zoe, his 15-year-old sprinting daughter, was a member of the team. George, who received his Amateur Athletics Board club coach award earlier this year, acted as an official.
But he is no amateur when it comes to lorry driving. His professional skill won him a £400 holiday for two in the finals of the Rank Xerox (UK) Supply Drivers' Competition at St Helens. He was the best of 39 drivers.
