I-1 A SCHEME by Marks and Spencer
Ltd, to beat traffic jams in delivering goods to their stores got a severe testing during the Aberdeen typhoid outbreak-and came out on top.
The company has grown at a rapid rate since the last war, but has not greatly increased the number of its stores. So goods had to be put through existing stores more quickly. The result, as assistant managing director Mr. Marcus Sieff, said: Before you know where you are you have lorries stuck in mile-long jams in every one of Britain's busy and congested high streets The "beat the jams" idea is simple. Instead of a lorry from each manufacturer visiting individual stores, they will deliver to central depots. There the loads will be broken down and transferred to big trucks delivering to the
stores So instead of 10 or 20 lorries, there will be only one. During the typhoid outbreak Marks and Spencer wanted to cut down on the number of lorries going in and out of Aberdeen. the scheme was successful,
The depots will be operated by the people responsible for the company's transport under contract now, and. in some cases by the suppliers who provide their own transport.
