cut in licences for road transport and would call for the re-examination of existing licences, said Mr. Ray Gunter, M.P., shadow Minister of Labour and president of the Transport Salaried Staffs Association, in Hull recently. Mr. Gunter said: "C licences are the centre of the transport problem; there are some aspects we would not interfere with but what worries us is the creation of great fleets of lorries ".
The railways could not be allowed to wither away so that they were unable to carry the raw materials of British industry, he said. They must play an important part in the underpinning of the economic life of the country.
Mr. Gunter repeated the Labour suggestion that the pruning of the railways should be halted until there had been a complete transport survey.
