• P&O European Ferries plans to launch a twice-weekly freight service between Portsmouth and Bilbao—but the venture is already under attack from rival Brittany Ferries.
The new route is due to open in April, with room for 70 driveraccompanied trucks. Brittany Ferries has asked the European Commission to investigate a deal which P&O has struck with the Basque Government.
The Basques have agreed to buy P&O tickets during winter if demand is low, to ensure that the service operates throughout the year.
