• Transport businesses have to be aware these days of keeping in harmony with the environment otherwise they are going to invite harsher legislation, said Eastern Traffic Commissioner Brigadier Compton Boyd when Travis Perkins Trading Co appeared at its third environmental inquiry in a week.
Following a change of entity, the company has had to seek new licences for its 163 operating centres in all but one Traffic Area. Those applications provoked environmental representations for three sites: Leatherhead, Worthing and Melton Mowbray.
In the Eastern Area the company sought authority for 179 vehicles and 18 trailers at 54 sites, including Mill Street, Melton Mowbray. The representors had been concerned about parking in Mill Street, but branch manager Andrew Hart said a reorganisation of the site meant the company's vehicles did not need to park in Mill Street.
Boyd granted a licence without restriction. He had heard nothing to suggest he ought to impose conditions on the licence.
In the South Eastern & Metropolitan Area the company sought a licence for 217 vehicles and four trailers at 48 sites, including Leatherhead, and Worthing,.
Traffic Commissioner Brigadier Michael Turner imposed a condition on the Leatherhead site that prohibited vehicles parking in Oak Road.
At Worthing Brigadier Turner imposed a condition on running engines early in the morning.
