• Sixty owner-drivers at ARC South Wales ended their twoweek-long strike last week, after management withdrew a revised rates structure which could cut the drivers' income by several thousand pounds a year (CM 2127 Jan).
ARC has temporarily re-instated the original system for the 27 contract and 33 hired drivers— but it has only agreed to negotiate rates with contract drivers.
Mick Binns, general secretary of the National Owner Drivers' Association, says it is "disgusting" that the drivers are being split. But he accepts that picketing was hurting all drivers at the 10 sites One driver lost more than £1,000 but says: "It was worthwhile: we got our old rate back."
Police are still investigating attacks on Cadwallader Transport Services, the Mid Glamorgan-based haulier which sent trucks through the picket lines Alleged attacks included shots fired at a depot, and dery emptied from a fuel tank.
Managing director Jeff Cadwallader is confident that there will be arrests: "I hope the people involved in the damage enjoy their five minutes of glory," he says, "because when their names inevitably come to light they will then face the consequences of their actions"
