Is it too much to ask that someone comes up with a definitive guide to how to keep truck wheels on? For the Department of Transport and the Traffic Commssioners to suggest that the problem is primarily one of maintenance is a worrying ▪ trend. Wheel fixing is an issue that affects even the most scrupulously maintained fleets. The problem is that we are still applying a horse-and-cart engineering solution to a hightech problem—and one where there is still room for doubt. Every time a tyre company fitter changes a wheel at the roadside he issues a driver with instructions to check wheelnut tightness after 50-100km! Why? Because even if you use a torque wrench there's no guarantee that clamping forces won't relax— often over a very short period. Until someone finally proves there ISN'T a wheel loss "mystery", our advice on wheelnuts is check, check and check again. Prevention is definitely better than prosecution.
