THE BATTLE between Gloucestershire hauliers and the South Wales miners was due to take another twist this week.
George and Richard Read, whose haulage company's drivers have been crossing National Union of Mineworkers picket lines at British Steel's Llanwern works, were seeking damages against the NUM at a hearing in the High Court on Thursday this week, after we closed for press.
The haulage company alleged that the Union was in breach of an injunction served in April this year. They had continued to interfere with the drivers and vehicles who were making the round trips between Port Talbot and the Llanwern steel works.
Transport and General Worker's Union spokesman said that the NUM would be unrepresented.
It also seems likely that there will be an order for punitive damages, which the Union would refuse to pay.
The spokesman then expected that a proportion of the South Wales Union's funds would be taken in fines.
