• West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority could be forced to cut a number of its services and increase fares next year following a £15 million cut in its spending limits. The warning was given at a recent meeting of the authority which has approved a precept of 34.28p in the pound and an annual operating expenditure of E46.56 million.
• Newcastle-based Busways Travel Services has taken delivery of 20 midibuses based on the Mercedes-Benz 709D van and converted by Reeve Burgess of Chesterfield.
They will be used on Busways new high-frequency Monument/Western Newcastle Metrocentre shuttle service. This offers shoppers a hail-and-ride service into town and will set down passengers on any suitable through road as near to their homes as possible on the return run.
• The Government has announced changes in rural bus subsidies in a move to encourage operators to make claims. The subsidy was originally introduced to help support rural services following deregulation last October. In a written answer in Parliament Transport Minister David Mitchell said that grants for next year will be paid at 5p a mile (3.1p/km).
• Strathclyde Buses will not be appealing against the recent decision by the Traffic Commissioner not to impose restrictions on the number of buses operating in Glasgow city centre following deregulation.
