MEDIUM WEIGHT ENGINES
Ford has stopped buying Detroit Diesel Allison's 8.2 litre, vee-eight diesel engine for use in its medium weight (Class 6 and 7) North American trucks. This means that currently the only truck manufacturer to use the 8.2 litre engine, which was introduced in 1979, is GMC, another General Motors subsidiary.
It is possible, however, that Dedec, the recently-established joint venture company owned 50/50 by GM and Deere and Company, may introduce the 8.2 litre engine to Europe where Cummins has begun to find customers for its 8.3 litre C Series.
Ford's replacement for the DDA engine in North America is its own, Brazilian-built, in-line six, developed from an old agricultural engine. The trucks in which this engine is fitted are equipped with Cargo cabs from Iveco Ford's Langley plant.
