letter (CM, March 14), I feel I must write and defend the T45.
1 drove a Roadtrain 1628 for over five years covering a quarter of a million miles, not without incident, I might add, but with no major breakdowns. I never lost a prop or broke a halfshaft. As for the gearbox — I agree it's nothing special but synchromesh? No thanks. Anyone who's used a decent constant mesh gearbox wouldn't settle happily for a syrichro.
I have recently given up "the road" after promotion to transport manager, and one of my first jobs was to buy another Roadtrain, this time with a Cummins LIO 290 in place of the old TL12. It's early days yet, but it has performed economically and reliably and I wouldn't hesitate recommending a Leyland to anyone.
