THE DISADVANTAGES to the public as a whole of proposals by Yeowarts Coaches to operate town services in Whitehaven in competition with Cumberland Motor Services (CM May 7) outweighed the benefits to the public of Whitehaven.
This was said by the Northern Traffic Commissioners in their written reasons for refusing the firm's application for two daily services and a Sunday service.
In their decision the commissioners say that fares in Whitehaven were substantially lower than they would have been had Yeowarts not operated. It was also a fact that over 288,000 new passenger journeys were generated during the 15 month period but the revenue from that additional traffic was insufficient to offset the loss to Cumberland.
Yeowart is awaiting the outcome of the general election before deciding whether to appeal.
