Winter Running.

Messrs. Leo. Swain and Co., of 237, Deansgate, Manchester, ask us to announce that they are specially prepared to deal promptly with the substitution of rubber tires for steel tires on steam-wagon wheels, including the supply of spare wheels, in anticipation of a severe winter. As is well known, steel-tired vehicles cannot run when snow is on the ground, with any degree of safety or certainty, and snow often lies for 10 or 12 weeks or more on the moors and other high lands of industrial areas in both Lancashire and Yorkshire. Messrs. Swain have arranged to carry large stocks, in order to deal promptly with urgent instructions due to the causes mentioned.

Two Tire Catalogues.

Tire catalogues necessarily become more bulky yearby year, having regard to the increasing adaptation of solid rubber to the running treads of road vehicles of various sizes and powers. At the same time, with a degree of care which is proof of commendable ability on the part of the compilers, representative makers of tires manage to condense their informative illustrations and text between the covers of catalogues which are complete without being unduly bulky.

One of the latest publications of the kind is to hand from the Peter Union Tyre Co., whose principal office is at 190-192, Great Portland Street, W., and whose Manchester office is at 21, Albion Street, Gaythorn. This volume runs to some 81 pages, and it contains valuable data in regard to Peter Union tires for all types of commercial vehicles, inclusive of motorbuses, motorvans arid goods lorries. Sections, imposed loads, prices ana code words are stated in detail, whilst convincing lists of manufacturers and owners who fit Peter Union solidrubber tires are included, together with reproductions from photographs of their vehicles and the testimonials which many of them have furnished to the makers. Mr. R. G. A. Rockernuhl. the sole representative in the United Kingdom for this make of tire, has confined the catalogue under notice to points concerning solid-rubber tires only, and we observe with interest his catch-phrase on the hack cover, which reads : " Peter Union tyre the world and tire competition." Mention is incidentally made of the company's special tire for Colonial use, which tire is constructed in such a manner as to enable anyone

to attach or detach it by hand, without the help of any instrument or machine. •

Another good catalogue, dated August, 1911, which we have occasion to notice to-day, is that which bears on its front cover the words " Challiner tyres," and a reproduction of the ShrewsburyTalbot coronet. This company's offices and works are at Ardwick Green, Manchester, and its chief London branch is at Page Street Works, Westminster, S.W. By the elimination of photographs of vehicles, the compilers manage to get the whole of the succinct information about their tires into a total of 68 pages, and to these pages a. well-arranged index is provided. Numerous half-tone illustrations are employed to illustrate the company's method of building up and securing its " World," " Challiner " and " Giant " tires, and, as might be expected, particular care is taken to convey adequate information in regard to Challiner's patent detachable bevel-liner device for solid tires. Load capacities, dimensions and prices are put down in well-considered relation to both the duties in view and the adjacent illustrations. Amongst other specialities of the Shrewsbury and Challiner Tyre Co., Ltd., there should be noted the following : artillery-pattern wood wheels, in which only the best material and well-seasoned timber is employed, and which are principally constructed at the company's Albion Wheel Works, Camberwell, S.E. ; Challiner's patent wrought-steel girder-type wheels, in both light and heavy sections, which vary in price from £22 10s. up to £40 per set ; Challiner's endless taxicab tire ; Challiner's resilient cross-nb

tire ; a wide range of clincher...-. section tires, and of what are known as the Bull" and "Angle Bull " tires. The catalogue concludes with three pages of code and general instructions for users. We may also state, that the Shrewsbury-Challiner Co, has, for the convenience of commercial-motor users, laid down plants for the fitting of its " Giant" and " World tires in the following towns : Man chester, Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, Westminster, Newcastleon-Tyne, Sheffield, Edinburgh, London (Camberwell), Bradford, and Belfast.

Welded Casks and Tanks.

The &tat Barrel Co., Ltd., of Uxbridge, Middlesex, has made extensive arrangements to cope with additional orders for welded steel tanks and storage installations, as well as to keep pace with the growing demand for welded steel casks. The company, as we have indicated in the course of several illustrated articles, manufactures both tanks and other storage vessels, and undertakes the laying down of complete storage equipments. For example, storage plant is now being erected at the Guinness Brewery, Dublin, and this will have a 5,000-gallon capacity. Up to the present, no fewer than 59 storage plants have been ordered from the Uxbridge works, the latest instructions coming from the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society, Ltd., for two installations on the Clyde. Having regard to the extra incentives to proper storage to which recent strike periods have given rise, we are not at all surprised to learn of this maintained activity. Expert advice is willingly given by the manager of the company, Mr. T. T. Heaton, in respect of all requirements.
