• More modest proposals for three-lane instead of four-lane motorways should be considered for the projected London primary road network, says a British Road Federation report published this week and based on a study by planning consultants and consulting engineers. These motorways, it says, could be completed more quickly and more cheaply. The report, "Motorways in the Urban Environment," argues that in order to achieve an appropriate balance between public and private transport, a comprehensive transport policy for an urban area should indicate how all types of transport are to be integrated.
