THREE grades of petrol tilling 1. station; With minminun standards defined for each.. are recommended by the 'Petrol , Stations Technical Corn mince in its report to the Minister of. Transport. This was published . on • Wednesday • by the Stationer'y Nike s (35, 6d.).

Grade 2 Stations
-Thee minimum requirements for. Grade 2 station should be two poweroperated pumps (3,000 gallons storage), stocks. of .oil, water supply, drive-way and, forecourt with hard surface, toilet aceommodation " and adequate service during six days aweek.. installation Of an air con-pressor and stocks of plugs, 'fuses and bulbs iS recommended.
For a Grade 3 station the committee recommends that minimum requirements should be one pump (1,500 gallons, stocks of oil, water supply, and adequate service during normal business hours. ; • On. motorways, trunk roads and Class 1 roads in rural-: areas, all stew • stations should be Grade I. At Least 20 Miles Apart

20 miles apart. • Many facts relating to existing petrol stations in Great Britain are given in the report. TWo surveys were carried "out during I947. The first, dealing with rural areas and a representative selection of trunk, Class 1 and Class 2 roads Erigland,i. Scotland'. and Wales, covered, a total of: 558 miles of trunk road with 335 stations and 1,453 pumps; 529 miles of ,Class I road (242 stations and .81.0 punipS):' • and , 420 miles of Class 2 road (101 stations and 265 pumps).
The second survey was made over a wide area to ascertain the, size and nature of petrol stations, with particu' lar:reference to' the facilities Offered. It covered 1,848 petrol stations. The 'committee, under the chairmanship of Lord Waleran, was set up by the Minister in February, 1947.
