A proposal by Norfolk County Council to ban heavy goods vehicles from the centre of King's Lynn has been turned down.
The decision represents a victory for local hauliers who fought against the measure at a three-day public inquiry in May.
The inspector in charge of the inquiry, Ian Cram, said in his report such a scheme would place the viability of the town's docks and the prosperity of the town itself, in jeopardy. It would have only a very marginal effect on the noise level and traffic flow along the London Road route, he added.
He recommends that the order be modified to allow heavy lorries to use the route as a corridor to the docks.
Norfolk County Council wanted to ban heavy goods vehicles of over three tons unladen weight from the town centre because it feared for the historic buildings.
