WITH reference to your road test on the Dodge G 26P articulated vehicle (CM, July 12), we wish to make the following comments.
Contrary to your report, a tractive unit (or a rigid) does not need 11.00-20 tyres to be plated to 16 tons gvw. In the UK 6610kg (six Imperial tons) can be carried on a single tyred axle and up to 10 900kg (well over the legal limit of 10 170kg) on a twin-tyred axle when fitted with 1000-20 tyres or 11R 22.5 tubeless radials as the majority of operators would use today.
Clearly the Dodge tractive unit is not limited to five tons on the front axle or 14.25 tons gvw by reason of tyre fitment.
Incidentally, Michelin radial steel cord tyres would not develop the overnight flat spot problems reported on your test vehicle.
