BRITAIN'S road freight industry is unlikely to be badly hit by new Common Market Legislation.
That was the conclusion of Frank Woodward, Transport Services Executive of Plessey, when he spoke at a London seminar on European Freight Transport in the late Seventies.
His personal view was that the Changes would not affect "day to day" operations as much as people were asked to believe.
Changes in legislation had occurred over many years and transport operators had thrived on them, solving immediate problems, re-planning and still having one of the best road freight industries in Europe.
Mr Woodward thought that the 450 kilometre limit for large vehicles and the eighthour driving day might make the railways more attractive in total cost for trunk hauls.
