ENGINEERING methods already used in some units make the new Stonefield 4 x 4 (CM June 25) unique from other cross country vehicles of this type.
The space frame using rectangular section steel tubes, jig welded, allow the body and any equipment mountings to be integrated with the main structure. This obviates the need for press chassis main members, which have to be changed in length to accommodate different wheelbases.
The technique also eliminates separate body frames up to waist level, further contributing to weight saving.
The 4 x 4 as shown in Aldershot has the payload of 1500kg. In the proposed 6 x 4 and 6 x 6 version this goes up to 3000kg. The new unit is aimed at civil engineering and public utility users in addition, to its military role and will lend itself readily to demountable load decks or 'special purpose superstructures.
As already described drive to both axles is constantly engaged. The four-wheel drive incorporates an automatic lock-up device by FF Developments of Coventry, which if any wheel or wheels slip, locks up all four. The release is instantaneous when wheel grip is restored.
The new vehicle was designed by Norman Watson who has also been responsible for much of the development work on the Ailsa bus and Volvo F86 8 x 4 chassis.
