HEAVV-DUTY 6 x 4 9-10-cu.-yd. dumpers are being built by Atkinson Vehicles, Ltd., for South African Railways. They are powered by Cummins HU-6-B six-cylindered oil engines which develop 158 b.h.p. at 1,800 r.p.m. and are used in conjunction with 18-in.-diameter single-dry-plate clutches and Z.F. AK6-75 six-speed constant-mesh gearboxes.
Four-spring suspension is provided at the rear bogie, giving sufficient articulation for dumper operation, and the overhead-worm rear axles have 81-in, centres and a reduction ratio of 8.25 to 1.
Bendix Westinghouse split-circuit air brakes are fitted and Manes cam-anddouble-roller steering, with Adamant hydraulic servo, is employed. The chassis frame is of 14-in. by 6-in, rolled-steel joists and the tipping-ram cradle is welded in position. The body can be tipped to an angle of 60°. All-steel halfcabs arc being provided by the Atkinson subsidiary company in South Africa, where the bodies will also be built.
The front wheels carry 11.00-22-in. tyres, whilst the single rear wheels have 14.00-20-in. equipment.
The vehicles for South Africa have forward control, but normaland forward-control designs are to be built for the home market and overseas. A Kirkstall two-spring bogie can be fitted if specified in place of the Atkinson fourspring layout.
