• RoadExpress, the company which carries out courier work for British Rail parcels carrier Red Star, is under investigation after its offices in London and the Midlands were raided by the British Transport Police.
The raid was revealed in a Channel Four documentary which also spoke to former Red Star employees in security and management positions. The employees, who were made redundant in 1991, accused Red Star of mismanagement with losses of £.9m last year.
Eric Gracey, an ex-Red Star general manager, claimed: "There was a can of worms which needed to be opened." Terry Nicklin, former head of security, believed he was forced out because he was causing embarrassment — Red Star says it is unhappy that its former
employees spoke out, but it has decided to "let the matter rest".
Former managing director Ivan Couchman claimed he made savings of £15m in a year before being made redundant.
Gordon Pettit, chairman of British Rail parcels board, denied that anyone was victimised for criticising Red Star.
