Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

RECENT EFFORTS by truck manufacturers to resolve vehicle warranty issues with third-party telematics suppliers have so far proved fruitless.

Mike Leeming.director responsible for telematics at MAN ERF says few if any telematics suppliers bother to approach vehicle manufacturers before fitting telematics systems to trucks.

This is despite a joint statement put out by MAN, ERF, Iveco, Volvo and Scania in April asking them to do just that.

As a result, vehicle operators continue to face potential loss of warranties in the same way as Leicester-based haulier Widdowson Group. which recently settled out of court with Minorplanet Systems for breach of contract after refusing to let it finish fitting out its fleet in light of a warranty warning from Scania (CM 16 October). There was no suggestion that the work carried out by Minorplanet was substandard.

John Hennessy, application engineer in the truck business unit at Iveco, adds that even where his firm has been approached, third parties haven't really followed its recommendations. "We've put a specific plug in the new Stralis cab for telematics equipment but there have been instances where they've just hacked into the loom and kept things in place with insulation tape — rubbish, really."
