disguise it, the tremendous increase in the number of C-licence vehicles is mainly due to the fear on the part of trade and industry that transport will be less efficient under nationalization," said Mr. R. Morton Mitchell, chief executive officer of the Road Haulage Association, to Dunstable Chamber of Commerce, on Monday.
This fear was aggravated by the lack of knowledge by traders and the general public of the limited extent of the activities of the British Transport Commission. Only a small proportion of hauliers was being taken over, no restrictions had yet been placed on hauliers remaining under free enterprise, and there was cause for hope that no serious restrictions would be imposed for a long time.
It would be unfortunate, therefore, if traders put their own vehicles on the road to avoid the delays and shortcomings of nationalized transport. whilst the hauliers on whom they had relied in the past still remained at their disposal.
