to comment on your leader of September 2, and the letter from Mr. C. T. Humpidge, published by you on September 16, both headed " Wanted—a Hire Car."
These, whilst referring to the Austin Hire Car, do not mention another Austin vehicle which is a far more attractive proposition to the private-hire operator who is looking for a more luxurious vehicle. I mean, of course, the A125 Sheerline saloon.
This car seems to meet most of the requirements given in your leader. It is a bonneted vehicle, of modern yet restrained appearance. The body is amply dimensioned and should be easy for elderly folk to enter or leave, whilst the large luggage compartment has a fold-down lid which can be used as additional carrying capacity.
The price, at about £1,790 including purchase tax, is nearly £200 less than that of the Humber Pullman mentioned by Mr. Humpidge. The only drawback to its use as a hire car is the rather large engine (4 litres) which, however, should lead to long periods between overhauls, and is in any case little larger than that of the Pullman.
Another car which has nearly all the features mentioned above, but with an 18 h.p. engine, is the Wolseley Six-Eighty, reasonably priced at less than £800 with P.T.
