THE PROFESSIONAL transport studies courses you have embarked on this month will, if you apply yourself, yield benefits in the long term. The rewards will come in enhanced knowledge; greater abilities leading to promotion; a greater degree of job mobility and the beginnings of a worthwhile transport career.
You must plan for success in your studies and keep your eye on the horizons of opportunity and challenge.
A high standard of thinking is, perhaps, more important than a high standard of living.
Imaginative thinking is necessary. if you are not to be merely a plodder. But you must be able to dream without making dreams your master.
Imagination is not a sedative to deaden life, but a force towards a more abundant life. It is the mind's ability to recall past experiences and relate them to new situations in combinations of infinite variety.
Limbering-up
Your imagination needs limbering-up once in a while. It cannot be ignored for long periods, then called upon in some crises. You should emulate T. E. Lawrence who found 'the morning freshness of the world-to-be intoxicating ''.
The difference between on-going and routine people is simply this: the successful people have kept their imagination at work. During your studies this coming winter, you should exercise your imagination fully. Don't sit back too soon. Develop a capacity for study based on curiosity and imagination.
You must remind yourselves that you are educating and training yourselves to be the leaders and managers of the future. Who will be running the industry in 20 or so years time? A lot of you, it is hoped.
You own ideas
You should, therefore, begin to develop your own ideas on the kind of issues you may have to face. To develop a capacity to think through problems on your own and have faith in your own judgements are also qualities you should develop during your studies.
You need an inclination to persevere in the studies to which you have set your mind. Making good calls for keeping going towards your objective.
The successful people around you did not reach their goal by weaving from side to side seeking novelty and pleasure, but by persistent effort along their planned route. You need dogged application to the task of today, but your imagirlation will turn diligence into enjoyable perseverance.
Extra pull
Always have something in reserve, a store of power not used. You never know when a little extra pull will see you through a difficult patch.
You should also develop a capacity to accept adversity in your career and stUdies. Sometimes, setbacks are the spur to greater efforts.
It is impossible to make progress in road transport or physical distribution without incurring risk. One must, sometimes, stop taking precautions in order to reach a clear cut result.
Belief
Belief in yourself today is necessary to your success and happiness in the long run. Studying today, working today, planning today these have real consequences for tomorrow. Nothing should be allowed to destroy hope of a good outcome earnestly sought — in this case, your success in your professional study of transport, and the qualification and status that goes with it.
No favours
All that has made man great has sprung from the hope of securing what was good, not from the struggle to avoid what was thought to be bad.
This is a most inspiring thought: that you will win your place in transport by no man's favour, but by your own intelligently directed effort.
