TWO swingeing penalties were imposed by the Scottish deputy Licensing Authority, Mr. L. A. Wells, at Kirkcaldy recently.
Hutchinson Bros., Dysart, Fife, whose conduct was investigated when granted an unopposed B-licence renewal application, were fined £1,200 in August, 1964, and soon afterwards several vehicles were suspended at a Section 178 inquiry because of poor maintenance. In June this year fines of £280 for operating without a licence and £20 for overloading were imposed.
Mr. Wells said his disapproval of such operations must be shown despite the fines, and he suspended one vehicle for 12 months, or two or three vehicles for proportionately shorter periods.
A similar penalty was imposed after evidence of a business takeover by W. D. Houston and Sons, Leven, from Duncan McKendrick. Auchterrnuchty. It was revealed that although McKendrick was paid for his business in 1964, applications for new licences were not made until September, 1965.
