.WELLINGTON boots and the RAF bomber were named after the Duke of Wellington, and that makes him an eponym; bunsen, and diesel and many other now common names of objects came about the same way: in fact so many that a small dictionary of eponymous names has been brought out.
My friends at BRS tell me that in Brazil a good deal of investigation is going on into vegetable-based fuels for diesels. Ethanol (ethyl alcohol derived from sugar cane), soyabean oil and cotton-seed oil are possibilities. The President of Brazil is named Geisel, so what price the geisel engine?
And talking of famous names we can now add another Britisher to the list. Henry H. Timken Sr, pioneer of the tapered roller bearing, was recently chosen to join Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Walter Chrysler and others in a Michigan hall of fame created by the Automotive Organisation Team, a national organisation for people working in all sectors of the US automotive industry.
Henry Timken was named by the AOT as "a man of leadership, sales drive and determined will whose influence lives on . around the world."
