• A Preston haulier's trailer fleet was described by the North Western LA, Mr. C. R. Hodgson, as "very bad indeed" in Manchester last week. A. Addison and Co. Ltd., called to an inquiry under Section 174, wag seeking the renewal of its A licence of 10 vehicles and eight trailers.
Ministry of Transport vehicle examiner Mr. A. J. Evans had carried out the routine inspection fbr\ licence renewals in February and out of 10 motor vehicles examined, one would have warranted an immediate GV9 and two delayed prohibitions, he said, but the work was done during his visit.
A later examination of 16 trailers resulted in 10 immediate GV9s and of the remaining six, five were withdrawn by the company as unfit for use. At another inspection five days later a further five out of six were also withdrawn. On each of these occasions there was only one trailer in good condition, said Mr. Evans.
Mr. A. Addison, a director, pointed out that a number of the trailers were used just to store goods off-loaded from ships and, in fact, the firm had 17 trailers in good condition. His mechanic had been ill for the month of January and since he usually overhauled a trailer in 1+ days, the fleet soon suffered by his absence. He assured the LA that records were now kept and the rigids sent to outside repairers.
Mr. Hodgson reserved his decision pending another fleet inspection.
