THEcurrent road construction programme in this country is out of scale with needs,. states the report of the' Road Research Board (11.M. Stationery Office, 5s.), published on Tuesday. The Board consider that the programme cannot keep pace with the increase in the number of vehicles licensed.
The rise in the amount of traffic between 1954-55 was double that which occurred during the previous year. Although growth of traffic was -welcome as a sign of national prosperity, it could be viewed only with grave disquiet.
The question of providing a more scientific basis for the national roads programme was considered by the Board's economic committee, which recommended that the Government should consider what new organization was required to meet the situation. It was, however, emphasized that the present building plan should not be delayed to await further studies of national needs.
Concern is expressed in the report over the defective state of many vehicles. •
