The Hughes Motor Engineering C of Batligate, will shortly be reconstructed as Hughes Motors, Ltd., with a capital of 2250,000. Ten acres adjoining their present factory. have been acquired for extensions, and we understand that they will concentrate on the manufacture of a 30-cwt. commercial vehicle. This new concern have also acquired the patent rights for plugs, carburetters, magnetos, and engines designed by Sir Willm ham Peck, City Astronomer, Edinburgh.
Fine Record of a Commer Fire-engine.
The fire-engine which we illustrate on this page has ' an interesting record of service to its credit. It was sent out to France in September, 1915, for the purpose of dealing with the numerous fires which occurred due to air raids and other causes. From that date until the Armistice it dealt with upwards of 90 fires, some of which were very serious and of considerable military importance. The brigade, which was formed with a nucleus of men who had previous firefighting experience, was under the command of Lieut.-Col. G. C. G. Blunt, D.S.O., 0.B.E. The N.C.°, in charge of the crew, Corporal Bird, gained the Meritorious Service Medal, the Groix de Guerre from the French authorities, and also the Silver Medal of the Society for the Protection of Life from Fire, and several other -Mei-ahem of the crew received recognition from the _French
