AVON & SOMERSET police report that 61% of the trucks carrying hazardous loads they checked last year were breaking the law.
Of the 180 vehicles stopped during 2004, police say 110 were found to be breaching the hazardous goods regulations. As a result 36 drivers were stopped from continuing their Journeys for serious offences, while 73 drivers were given verbal warnings for minor infringements. One operator, with "multiple, significant breaches"is now being prosecuted.
Sergeant Nigel Butler of the Avon & Somerset road policing unit says: "Crime and terrorism remain high-profile issues which could be associated with this type of transportation, and we will continue to conduct stop checks, targeting those who jeopardise safety.
"National intelligence appears to be similar to the results collated within our area," he adds. "We are determined to work with all those involved in this area of road transport to improve safety and standards."
