As margins become ever slimmer UK trailer makers face a difficult dilemma. While standard dry-freight products such as curtainsiders create volume, smaller market niche products inevitably deliver better margins. Only big players need big volumes.
The inevitable consequence of this rock and a hard-place scenario is that manufacturers will continue to pursue production line cost savings wherever they can find them even though most are already lean and mean. The predicted cooling of the European trailer market will also put home producers under pressure and further rationalisation of the UK trailer market can't be ruled out.
