Engines: 72-lit, 6cyl, 280hp/1,050Nm, 320hp/1,200Nm Transmission: 6spd auto, 9spd man (optional) Chassis: 6x4 GVW: 26.ot Wheelbase:4,865-6,865mm Volvo's FE has hit the ground running to compete against the likes of the MAN TGM and Oaf CF75 in the utility market. Its 26-tonne GVW and heavier chassis are a disadvantage, but the FE is a safe option operators are familiar with.
The exterior borrows from the French and the 7.2-litre engine, which was developed from the Deutz motor, is available in three power ratings.
On three axles, the 320hp appears a little weak at the bottom end when asked to move away from standstill and through urban areas, as well as at the top end, moving swiftly up from 20mph towards A-road and dualcarriageway speed limits.
It has been available in the UK for the better part of 18 months. Aggregate operators might prefer the FM but for a versatile tipper on three axles, the FE certainly has plenty to offer.
