A MONG proposals to be put fortt ward at the biennial conference of the Transport and General Workers' Union, which opens at Southsea on July 13, is one that the Union should act as caretakers for long-distance road haulage until it is nationalized again. Another suggestion is that the Union should buy transport units from the British .Transpoit Commission and operate them.
Several motions criticize the Union's leaders. One branch feels that had a national delegate conference on the question been held, there would have been less unofficial action by members in the campaign against road transport denationalization. Another says that the executive treated the Government's denationalization measures too lightly and hopes that they will do better for their members' welfare when road transport is returned to private ownership.
Demands for higher pay are to be made by bus and tram workers. There seems to be a fear among the lower-. paid transport workers that they are being left behind in the general rush for higher wages.
