ACH oil-engined taxi operated by L"-.. Birch Bros., Ltd., Cathcart Street, London, N.W.5, is showing a saving in operating costs of 1200 a year. Mr. John Birch, who can be said to have pioneered the oil-engined taxi in London, told The Commercial Motor, this week, that his company's experience with their own fleet was now nearing the 500,000-mile mark.
The average fuel consumption of the fleet worked out at the rate of 32 m.p.g., to which it was possible another. mile would soon be added. Birch Bros., Ltd., were now carrying out conversions for other operators, the engine used being similar to their own, which is made by the Standard Motor Co,, Ltd. Mr. John Birch materially assisted in the development of the engine for its present purpose. A description of the first of these cabs appeared in The Commercial Motor for August 29, 1952.
