IGHT nurses appeared as witnesses La for York Motors (Manchester), Ltd., when they applied to the North Western Traffic Commissioners, on Monday, to extend their express services between Shorrock's Dance Academy, Manchester,
and various outlying hospitals.
They wanted to operate. on Tuesdays. Wednesdays and Thursdays as required, leaving the Academy at 11 p.m. Objectors were Manchester and Salford Corporations.
Mr. H. Robinson, for York Motors. said the 'company had operated a weekend service for nurses returning from the Academy for over a year. The present application was necessitated by the introduction of special mid-week functions at the dance hall.
All student nurses were due back at their quarters by 11.30 p.m., so the use of public transport for their return was out of the question. This view was upheld by the eight nurses from hospitals at Davyhulme, Stockport and Prestwich, who claimed that public transport facilities at that time of night were inadequate.
For the objectors, Mr. J. A. Swalwell referred to the number of corporation buses which stopped at or near the Academy between 11 p.m. and 11.10 p.m. He added that, by leaving only a few minutes early, nurses could return to their quarters by the corporations' buses in time.
Mr. F. Williamson, chairman, granted the application With the exception of certain setting-down points on the Stockport run, on which he reserved decision.
FINE AFTER COMPLAINTS BY LIVESTOCK HAULIERS
FTER several livestock hauliers in r-vthe Colchester area had complained that they were losing business to _ an unlicensed competitor an investigation was carried out, Mr. T. F. Keating told Colchester magistrates last week. Before the court was John Woodward Frederick Hughes, Boswell Drive, Chelmsford, who denied three cases of carrying goods for hire or reward with a -C-licence vehicle.
Mr. Keating said Hughes had been quite frank when questioned, and it seemed he misunderstood the licensing position. Hughes had said 'thathe bought livestock as a spare-time job and received commission from his customers. He was not paid for delivery, but if a haulier carried the animals the customer paid-for the work. .. • Hughes was fined a total of £3, with 'a further £3 for not keeping proper records.
