PROPOSALS for making the use of headlamps compulsory when driving at night have been made by Dr John Gilbert, Minister for Transport. Draft regulations have been sent to interested parties for their views.
At present drivers are required to use their headlamps only when driving on roads which have no street lighting at all or where street lamps are more than 200 yards apart. The regulations are being implemented because of a considerable rise in the number of accidents in urban areas since vehicles were allowed to park without lights.
