HAULIERS waiting for something to turn up on the jobs front may find a crumb of comfort in an employment survey for the next three months published by Manpower, the service group.
Operators' optimism is likely to be fed by the fact that the big job slump in the primary industries has eased. On the other hand recruitment plans have dropped by one-third among companies which normally show a winter seasonal peak.
The survey is based on returns from 3,602 companies in 30 industry groupings covering one million employees.
It shows •that in transport vehicle (excluding cars) manufacturing 12.3 per cent of employers expect to shed staff —a figure just below the national average. Comments by some of these manufacturers indicate a wary belief that their business will slowly improve in the New Year.
