BECAUSE of the high specific gravity of the syrup which forms its regular load, the 30ton-gross Atkinson Silver Knight tractive unit illustrated below is used with a stainless steel tanker of approximately 3,000 gal. capacity.
The tank, a product of the Universal Boiler and Engineering Co. Ltd., Burnley, is fitted with a 3in. Albany reversible pump underslung amidships and is driven by direct drive from a ZF six-speed overdrive gearbox. The tractive unit has a Cummins NHE 180 engine.
Operated by North Cheshire Motors Ltd. on contract to Tunnel Refineries Ltd., the outfit carries syrup from Greenwich to Glasgow, the average fuel consumption recorded to date being 8.75 m.p.g.
The suppliers were Transport Vehicles (Warrington) Ltd.
