THE Minister of Transport last week met 'chairmen of Regional Economic Planning Comcils at the Ministry. Those attending were: Mr. William Ross (Secretary of State for Scotland and chairman of the Scottish Council), Mr. Goronwy Roberts (Minister of State for Wales and chairman of the Welsh Council), Sir Miles Thomas (Wales), air. T. Dan Smith (Northern), Mr. C. F. Carter (North Western), Sir Joseph Hunt (West Midlands), Mr. G. Dearing (East Midlands), Prof. Ronald Tress (South Western), Mr. K. Keith (East Anglia), Mr. Austen Albu (Minister of State, Department of Economic Affairs), Mr. Stephen Swingler and Mr. John Morris, Joint Parliamentary Secretaries to the Ministry of Transport.
The Minister said that she had arranged this meeting to give her an early opportunity of discussing personally with the chairmen ways in which their Councils could most usefully help her in her job as Minister and, equally important, how the Ministry could best help them in their job of economic planning in the regions.
In a wide-ranging discussion it was agreed that, in view of the vital part played by transport in regional economic devtlopment, it was essen
tial to bring transport policy, in all its aspects into closer relationship with regional planning as a whole.
The chairmen readily agreed to the Minister's request that as a contribution to the drawing up of a national transport plan, they should press ahead with studies of how all forms of transport within their areas could be integrated. They will meet the Minister again in a month's time to report progress.
