LONDON Transport has asked the Greater London Council for approval to install 1,300 two-way radio sets at an estimated cost of £950,000 in its buses.
About 1,250 London Transport buses are already fitted with radios and a further 1,050 are being fitted.
The bus control system has already proved invaluable in bus control and in preventing assaults on crews. The drivers can, through a central control, call for the police, ambulance and fire services as well as reporting serious traffic delays and operating failures.
The role of the radio system could be extended, if a recently announced comprehensive plan is implemented, to become part of a computerised bus control system.
. If the new proposals are accepted, 39 garages will be involved, nine of which would have radio equipment for the first time.
