The conference season is almost over — only the BAR autumn conference on November 15 remains. So it was possibly appropriate that our man at Torquay should ask some delegates "Why did you come to the conference?"
The answers were varied, numerous and one might even say, in places, unexpected. "I come every year." "It's our autumn holiday." "My wife wouldn't miss it.'' "It's a bit of a break." "We come as a group."
Not one delegate said "I've come to hear the speakers," or "the finance papers attracted me." There was one delegate who had possibly the best reason in the world. "It's the one time of the year when I can meet another 200 people in thE business to exchange views, pick up ideas and hopefully correct mistakes."
Well, why have speakers? Why not just invite the delegates to come along for a drink and a chat? "Why not indeed, but not instead of — as well as", he said, "my wife enjoys the break."
