• Two drivers could face fines of up to £5,004) after a crackdown by the Vehicle Inspectorate (VI) on vehicles transporting hazardous materials without the required markings.
The trucks were among 168 vehicles stopped at the Dartford Tunnel last week after the local council and police raised concerns that vehicles carrying dangerous goods are using the tunnel but not displaying the appropriate markings.
The two trucks, one of which was registered abroad, were carrying an oxidising agent and acid.
Only one had stopped at the toll booth to register the hazardous load. According to a VI spokesman, the Traffic Examiners will be passing a report to the Health & Safety Executive which will decide whether to prosecute.
Bob Brockhurst, VI area manager for the South-East, says: "Enforcement checks such as these are a valuable means of improving the state and safety of the vehicle fleet."
The roadside check, which coincided with National Health and Safety Week, also resulted in eight immediate and six delayed prohibitions against trucks.
