Police found a lorry driver dismantling a stolen £12,000 Leyland truck after the officers had been guided there by a tracking device, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.
William O'Rourke of Brierley Hill, West Midlands, was put on probation for 18 months and ordered to do 80 hours' community service work after he admitted handling the stolen vehicle.
Kevin Hegarty, prosecuting, said the Leyland truck was loaded with boiler equipment worth E20,000 when it was stolen from a site in Necheils, Birmingham. The truck was fitted with a tracking device and police traced it to a skip-hire firm in Boll Lane, Lye, near Stourbridge, where O'Rourke worked as a driver.
Police arrived at the Lye site the day after the vehicle had been stolen and found O'Rourke cutting up the truck in a locked garage.
Samantha Crabb, defending, said O'Rourke did not stand to gain financially.
She said he realised the lorry was stolen "when it fell into his hands".
