THE British Rubber Manufacturers' Association which represents Britain's tyre producers, has announced a simplified tyre grading system.
Where new cross-ply and radial tyres fail to reach maximum-quality standards but are nevertheless structurally sound, they will, from October, be branded "Regrade Quality". And in every case the appropriate speed rating markings will be retained.
Car-derived van tyres which fail to meet either first grade or "Regrade Quality" standards will be branded "Seconds". The speed markings on "Seconds" will be removed and they should not be driven at speeds beyond 113 km1 h (70 mph) for 10 in diameter rims, or 120km/ h (75mph) for rims more than 10 in diameter.
