THE difficulties of providing A.C. power supplies for fluorescent lighting from a D.C. bus battery are well known. The problem has been solved on a test vehicle by Coventry City Transport in 7onjunction with the General Electric Company.
A transistor supply system has doubled the illumination available with h out any increase in power consumption. In addition, it is claimed that the life of the fluorescent tubes is much greater than tungsten filament lamps, particularly when vibration is present.
Experiments with transistors have formed part of a research programme initiated by the Coventry undertaking in their efforts to reduce the costs of operation and maintenance. It is likely that the new lighting system will be applied to .other vehicles in the fleet.
