Michelin Tyre Co. that the D.20 " X " tyre has been permitted to carry 60 cwt. for some applications, but not the 10-00-20 "X" as stated in a news item in The Commercial Motor of January 15.
In a statement issued by the company it is said that Michelin has not sought to alter the tyre ratings published by the S.M.M.T., but in discussion with "interested parties we have recommended the use of a tyre size for a particular axle load as being the most economical fitment ". The statement goes on to say "a typical case has been the 16 ton g.v.w. vehicle which would usually be plated for 6 tons front axle and 10 tons rear axle. The Michelin D.20 "X" (or 10-00-20, 16-ply) fitted all round would be loaded 5.3 per cent above the S.M.M.T. schedule on the front axle and 1.8 per cent on the rear axle, and would thus be both technically and commercially sensible ".
Discussions are proceeding says Michelin, relative to other permissible fitments.
