Provided the categories and class were complementary when coupling a tractive unit and trailer, the driver could be certain that his cab would not be demolished at the first tight roundabout and that the combination dimensions would also satisfy any traffic examiner.
BRSL has incorporated the SMMT scheme on its fleet of 6000 tractive units and 10,000 trailers, hut the addition of colour-code system makes the matching much simpler.
Each category and class are allocated a colour (as shown in the accompanying tables). The term Phase 1 corresponds to Category B and Phase 2 to Category A of the SMMT scheme.
An Sin, coloured plastics disc is fitted to the right-hand top corner of the headboard of each trailer supplied to BRSL. Platform length and gross train weight are also painted on the disc. A small plate, 4in. long and 21n. wide, fitted to the inside of the tractive unit cab indicates, by colour, to which phase and class of trailer the unit may be.coupled.
