Came across a case the other day where a new operator really learned the hard way.
He'd bought a "used" fridge trailer from some back-street dealer, as seen and approved, without getting anyone's advice. Cost him £2,850. You should see it!
Apart from the fridge unit failing only days after the purchase, the trailer doors were on the point of falling off. It was fitted with meat rails — in mild steel angle. Needless to say they .had rusted -and in any case were just screwed to the roof panels.
No side marker lights could be found, the kingpin position had been moved forward some four feet (!) without strengthening, and the trailer was fitted with non-working two-line air brakes and an "amazing and unusual" Danish suspension.
Sad to see a man taken in like this — he might get £500 back for the scrap parts — but it's just as bad for reputable dealers that people are willing to sell such rubbish to unsuspecting newcomers. Fortunately, it's rare these days, compared with the situation at one time.
